Creative snacks for homeschool recess

As students prepare to take their classes online for their safety amid the pandemic, it is important to keep them fueled and motivated for school. To help boost their creativity and learning, Solane, the country’s leading LPG solutions provider, suggests smart tips for creative snacks that are perfect for study breaks:

Create fun snacks during craft-making day. Parents can bake butter cookies, cupcakes or cakes while kids decorate them with designs like the planets of the solar system or their favorite literary characters. The key is to think out of the box and prep ahead of time or during the weekend so everything is ready for a quick snack break. Doing this can help make their homeschooling experience more fun and give them something enjoyable to look forward to every week.

Have a weekly themed recess. Turn recess into an opportunity to learn something new. It can be a fun science experiment like turning milk into ice cream or it can be a short “tour around the world,” discovering different cultures through food. Serve them various cuisines as their snacks with a new country as the theme every day or every week.

Make bento boxes. Some parents struggle to make their kids eat nutritious foods. To encourage and excite the kids to eat well-balanced meals, why not make bento boxes? Utilize colorful ingredients or shape them into cute animals to make the bento box visually appetizing. Other great ideas for bento lunch sets are sushi sandwiches with sliced fruits or nori-wrapped rice sandwiches that can be made from leftovers.

Incorporate food that boost memory and concentration. Help kids get through their homeschool hours by preparing “brain food” to boost memory and concentration. Try fruit bowls or smoothies with blueberries, strawberries, kiwis and oranges. Studies show that these fruits contain vitamin C and antioxidants, which help prevent mental decline and improve communication in the brain cells, respectively. Be sure to include fatty fish like salmon, sardines, tuna, mackerel, which are rich in omega-3s for better cognition and thinking abilities.

Prepare these fun and healthy snack options suggested by Solane to help students be well and learn better. To know more, visit www.solane.com.ph.

Keeping homes safe during rainy season

The rainy season may mean cooler days but it also brings thunderstorms, floods, and strong winds that can cause accidents or lead to calamities.

Solane, the country’s leading LPG solutions provider, tries to help its clients remain safe and secure by reinforcing its Dapat Lang advocacy campaign, which emphasizes the importance of doing the right thing for the family, for others, and society as a whole. Solane suggests precautionary steps families can take to protect lives and properties during inclement weather:

Be informed and stay alert. Be informed to avoid flashfloods, lightning and other dangerous conditions during the rainy season. Monitor your surroundings and keep track of the weather forecast through the internet, TV, or radio.

Prepare a disaster kit. Pack a disaster kit to sustain the family in the event of severe weather conditions. Kit should have essential items that will last for at least three days like potable water, first aid kit, medicines, food that doesn’t require cooking or refrigeration, portable and battery-operated radio, flashlights, and extra batteries.

Safety during lightning. Stay indoors during thunderstorms. Unplug electronic devices, including TV, computers, home entertainment systems, and corded phones inside the homes as they may cause electrocution or fires.

Be prepared to evacuate. Discuss evacuation plans with family and specify a meeting place when separated. Set the safe places to go to during strong rains and flood. Know the alternative routes to take to avoid flooded areas.

With proper and careful preparation, you and your family can avoid the dangers of the rainy season.

It’s all in the family

They say running a business with family members can be tricky – not only does it blur the line between what’s personal and professional, but it also has the potential to bring out the worst in you and your relatives.

Fabson Founder Loreta Santos and head of marketing Eric Santos with ISLA LPG Corp. (ILC) communications manager Marco "Mico" Santos (leftmost) and account manager

For the owners of Fabson Inc., a family-owned corporation that distributes Solane LPG in Iloilo City, working with close relatives has brought out the best in each of them. Eric Santos, head of marketing – and son of the owners – shared: “It’s a family-owned company but we strive to be professionals. And it comes naturally since we grew up working together. It’s an environment that we are used to.”

Looking at the company’s consistent growth in the past 48 years, it really looks like working with family is something that Fabson employees thrive in. Pioneered by Eric’s aunt as a single proprietorship in April 1968, it was then handed over to their mother, Loreta Santos, who managed to keep the company afloat with her prowess for finance and treasury. However, despite enjoying many years of success as a single proprietorship, they thought it could benefit more if it was turned into a corporation.

Spearheaded by their father, Winston Santos, who is also a former Shell executive, Fabson officially became a corporation in 1994, bringing with it the core value of Shellane (now Solane): “We care.” Under the management of Winston, the company became a more organized entity with different departments in place.

“Before my dad took over the business, it was like a mom and pop store. There were no retail outlets and there was no formal organizational structure. It was ran sari-sari store style, and we couldn’t grow as much,” said Eric, who also works with his sister, Pien, the COO.

According to Eric, his dad applied everything he learned from Shell, one of the top petroleum companies. He deployed retail sales executives and commercial sales executives to cover designated areas. “From handling a network of ten retail outlets, it grew to 20, and now we have around 600 outlets covering the whole area of our network,” he said.

In addition to Winston re-engineering the company, each member of the family was encouraged to be very hands-on with the business – from knowing the products by heart to studying routes of their delivery trucks.

Their immersion in the business is part of the reason why the familial relationship extends to their employees. With the “we care” core value, employee retention grew, and each staff members treated as an extension of their family.

Eric adds that every employee is trained to provide topnotch service to customers, including the 7-point safety check, Hatid Bahay, and 24-hour service. He notes that these after-sales initiatives are factors that help minimize the number of consumers who would buy at independently refilled outlets as they realize that the quality of genuine Solane products and the service they get makes it more cost-efficient in the long run.

Without a doubt, these business practices have made it possible for Fabson to become the longest running Solane distributor in Iloilo. Adds Eric: “This kind of business is something you have to immerse in because if you just leave it there, it can grow but you will not appreciate it as much. You have to sacrifice a lot, and you have to know your products very well.”
